Grapes: Nocchianello nero
Nocchianello nero is an ancient vine of Pitigliano. It is a totally native vine without any genetic relationship with known vines.
We brought it back to cultivation in 2010, starting from the collection of CREA in Arezzo who had once recovered it from the old vineyards of the area, and we grafted it on some rows in our vineyards. Some old nocchianello nero plant can also be found in the Vigna San Lorenzo, together with our old ciliegiolo.
The nocchianello vine is quite vigorous; the thick leaf resembles the fig leaf, the shoots grow and stretch a lot, it sometimes looks like a pergola plant. The grapes ripen late, at least 7 days after Sangiovese and this can be interesting in these situations of crazy climate with early ripening: the possibility of having a vine that ripens the grapes with not excessive temperatures, allows us a better expression of aromas. The grapes are very beautiful, pruinose, resistant and crunchy. Good accumulation of sugars with acidity that remains reasonable. There is not much color. We made small vinifications from 2011 until 2019, now on the market.
The wine is ruby red, clear of medium intensity. The aroma has spicy notes of white pepper, cassis and nutmeg, with a slight wild note. The taste of the wine shows good acidity,non-aggressive tannins, good aromatic persistence, lots of pepper.
